The Australian Strategic Policy Institute is pleased to invite you to a special event on what’s next for the US-Australia alliance, to be hosted in Canberra on Tuesday 18 March.
At this event, ASPI Senior Fellow Ami Bagia, will be joined by Evan A. Feigenbaum, Vice President for Studies at the Carnegie Endowment; Courtney Stewart, Senior Managing Consultant at OCRT; Peter Tesch, ASPI Senior Fellow and Visiting Fellow at the ANU Centre for European Studies, and Professor Stephan Frühling from ANU’s Strategic and Defence Studies Centre – co-authors of the new Carnegie report ‘Alliance Future: Rewiring Australia and the United States’.
Australia’s alliance with the United States is the most consequential partnership in Australian strategic policy. Dating back to the signing of the ANZUS Treaty in 1951, Australia and the United States have worked together to address security threats, including standing shoulder to shoulder in conflicts and to counter terrorism as well as to maintain regional stability and prosperity in times of natural disaster.
A partnership that has existed to ensure national security and global stability, it has consistently evolved as the challenges have changed, dealing with both non-state terror and cyber actors as well as state-based threats. The relationship has adapted to the reality of the emerging strategic challenges and has been complemented by partnerships such as the trilateral AUKUS and Quad groupings.
This event is timely given the current shifts and disruption we are witnessing relating to the Trans-Atlantic relationship, with questions being raised about what it means for US alliances in the Indo-Pacific, including with Australia. This event will consider how the alliance is adapting to a deteriorating global strategic environment and how it can and needs to evolve to address new and emerging threats.
