Strategic Policing and Law Enforcement

The ASPI Strategic Policing and Law Enforcement Program examines the evolving role of law enforcement in Australia’s national security landscape. As threats become more complex, transnational, and technologically advanced, policing agencies must adapt to new challenges that extend beyond traditional crime control. This program provides independent, policy-driven research to help shape Australia’s law enforcement capabilities, ensuring they remain effective, adaptable, and aligned with broader security priorities.

The program’s research is highly focused on the intersection between law enforcement and national security, addressing critical issues such as transnational organised crime, the strategic role of policing in international partnerships, and the future of law enforcement in an increasingly digitised world. ASPI’s work in this area provides evidence-based insights to guide policy development, strengthen operational capabilities, and enhance Australia’s law enforcement contributions to global security.

Key Research Areas:

  • Law Enforcement and National Security – Examining how domestic policing intersects with broader security challenges, including terrorism, cybercrime, and foreign interference;
  • Policing and Australia’s International Objectives – Analysing the role of Australian law enforcement in regional stability, international partnerships, and security cooperation;
  • Transnational Serious and Organised Crime – Investigating the scope, impact, and evolution of organised criminal networks operating within and beyond Australia.
